Cameroon Cocoa Prices Down |

Cocoa beans in the Centre Region the country's second most important cocoa region, are being sold for FCFA 975-1,025 ($2.06-2.17) a kilogram, down from FCFA1,150-1,200/kg a fortnight ago, farmers and traders told Dow Jones Newswires Friday. "We're selling a kilogram of cocoa beans this week at FCFA 1,025 in Bafia, but farmers selling their crop up country give it out at FCFA 975-1,000," said cocoa farmer Alphonse Emmanuel Nguile, who is also vice-president of the National Organisation of Cocoa and Coffee Producers.

The Minister of Finance, Essimi Menye, has told Central Committee Members of the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement that the future of Cameroon's economy is not so bright. He recounted that Finance Ministers from the CEMAC zone met with their European counterparts recently to request for financial assistance to continue with poverty reduction reforms in the sub region; the response was not encouraging. The donors said financial assistance to developing countries would be trimmed. The latest decision has been influenced by the global credit crunch which is forcing many companies out of business consequently leading to significant job losses in Europe, America and Asia.

Cameroon’s Last Cinema Hall Shuts Down |

The last surviving cinema hall in Douala has finally been shut down. “Cinema le Wouri” was sealed off Monday 19 January 2008 by the owners of the building. The Landlord blamed the management of the hall for not paying their rents.

Cameroonians may soon heave a sigh of relieve following news of the imminent creation of a Health Insurance Fund. An inter- ministerial committee for the modernisation of the social security system in Cameroon met recently Yaounde for its 7th session, during which members reviewed draft texts on the general functioning of mutual assistance groups in view of integrating them in the Health Insurance Fund to be created. The health insurance fund will cover workers in both the public and private sectors.

The Delegations, in the presence of government officials, examined a series of drafts presented by the pilot committee which has been set up to elaborate all working documents.

West, Central African Experts To Boost Water Sector |

Water experts from West and Central Africa recently met in Yaounde in a bid to seek ways of boosting the water sector in the regions. The two-day meeting was also aimed at drawing up a programme for the co-financing of water and sanitation projects in West and central Africa. The meeting took place at the Cameroon programme office of International Union for the Conservation of Nature, IUCN.

Authorities of the Regional Delegation for Trade and Commerce for the South West, Friday 9 January 2009, seized and auctioned over 600 bags of cement in Buea in continuation of the ministry’s policy to fight against price hikes and artificial scarcity of some basic products created by traders. During the operation a bag of cement was sold at FCFA 4900 as opposed to between FCFA 5500 and 6500 dealers in the building materials used to sell.

The Commonwealth is aware of media reports stating ‘a Commonwealth position’ on the appointment of ELECAM Members, alleging that the Commonwealth has suspended support to the Government of Cameroon as a consequence of this development. The reports are inaccurate. The Commonwealth has not issued any public statement on the establishment and composition of ELECAM. We will be discussing the matter as part of our ongoing engagement with the Government of Cameroon. The Commonwealth emphasises its commitment to strengthening democratic processes and institutions in Cameroon.

A form four student of Cameroon College of Arts and Sciences, CCAS Kumba, drank a poisonous insecticide, “Gamalin 20”, to end her life last 7 January 2009. Njeh Charlotte, of Metta origin was on holidays at Kwa Kwa, a village along the Kumba Ekondo Titi road when she suddenly turned funny and took away her own life. Eyewitnesses recounted that, Njeh, 16, did not return to school as early as others. Even with the parent’s insistence, the young lady stood her grounds, arguing that she must put in more days back at home before negotiating for a return to college.

Extremists Halt Church Construction |

Religious extremists from a popular radical Hindu activist group have brought a church construction project to a halt. They have set up a tent outside the unfinished building to conduct rituals to their gods. The extremists descended on the church, which is under construction in Uttar Pradesh, India, on 17 December. They placed vermillion-red flags on the church building, which is a sign that it has been taken over for Hindu use.

On the day that Donald Peters died, he unknowingly provided financial security for his wife of 59 years and their family. Peters bought two Connecticut Lottery tickets at a local 7-Eleven store on Nov. 1 as part of a 20-year tradition he shared with his wife Charlotte. Later that day, the 79-year-old retired hat factory worker suffered a fatal heart attack while working in his yard in Danbury. On Friday, his widow cashed in one of the tickets: a $10 million winner which, in her grief over her husband’s death, she had put aside and almost discarded before recently checking the numbers.
