Tali in Manyu Division of the South West Province will, in no distant future, get an ultra modern university called African University. This disclosure was made recently in a Manyu Free Talk Initiative in the United States by Dr. William Agbor Baiyee, who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the African University, Indianapolis. According to Dr. Agbor Baiyee, the University has already acquired some 10 square miles of land donated by the Tali Traditional Council since 2002.
The African University (AU), will, according to Dr. Baiyee, accelerate community development since it would be located next to the Bayangmbot Forest Reserve, which would culminate in a magnate for tourism. Integrity, creativity and excellence would be amongst the values of the university, Dr. Baiyee enthused. He pointed out that leadership problem in Africa is that of integrity which is why AU is poised to train new leaders with integrity. He boasted that quality will be a premium at AU. The Chairman of Board of Trustees posited that the essence of knowledge is rooted in the capacity to empower, inspire and transform mankind. It should be noted that Enow Tanjong, is the African University Foundation Chairman in Cameroon. In consonance with the determination to actualise the AU project, a high-power delegation from the United States made an exploratory trip to Cameroon in July last year where they Visited Buea, Tali, and the Ministry of Higher Education in Yaounde. Dr. Baiyee opined that apart from being an ultra-modern citadel of learning, AU will focus on piloting community development. Governance at the University would be based on democratic norms as students, staff, council, as well as the board of trustees would all participate in governing the Institution, Dr. Baiyee disclosed. He does not see the bad roads in Manyu as an impediment to the project for, as he puts it, private investors who would be attracted to the area, will hopefully build the roads. Although the University will be an international one, Dr. Baiyee hinted that most of its faculties would be based in Manyu Division. Christmas Ebini Atem who also took part in the talks, commended Dr. Baiyee for being able to navigate in such a complex cultural atmosphere where people from Manyu in particular have deliberately refused to prosper, fighting pervasive wars that have divided, than united the highly endowed people. H. Bate Agbor-Baiyee, author and administrator at the Arizona State University, George Ebai, amongst others, made valuable contributions during the Free Talk Forum. It is worth mentioning that apart from being the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. William Agbor Baiyee is a Faculty member and Administrator at Indiana University of Medicine, Indianapolis; where he directs the master of science in Medical Science Programme and Special programmes in the office of Medical Student Affairs. He holds a PhD. in Higher Education and M.P.A in management and an M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana University, as well as B.S (Hons.) in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Ball State University. |
