Parrots, like you and I know, are very clever creatures. They can imitate and repeat anything said once they are taught. Mr. Brighton, Inspector General of Police in the four ties in Buea, had one of these birds caged and hung by the front door. The Inspector had done a good job. Nobody could enter the house without being interrupted by Joe as the parrot was called. “Stop! He would say, and then “What’s ya name?” Joe surprised many guests. I have never heard of senseless or stupid parrots but someone, quite unabashedly, said Anglophones in Cameroon are no better than stupid, senseless parrots. I would have cut off the fellow’s tongue if I had the chance. Be the first to comment this article | Views: 86 | Tell a Friend | + Read More... |

The story of Animal Farm is an every-day occurrence in most parts of Africa but more so in Cameroon; a country which, by international standards, has been rated as the most corrupt in the world more than once. Simple as it may appear to be, since there is no penalty attached to such judgment, the rulers of such a state, if they have any conscience at all or interest of the people, should feel disturbed by such bad news and spend sleepless nights trying to rectify the system. "The way the cookies go" is one of those attractive stories by the famous story-writer, Peter Cheney. He weaved and coined his stories to bring home the realities of our daily life. Believe it or not I would rather dwell on one of his novels than do my home work. This was way back in the fourties. As I think of that novel, this also comes to mind; Be the first to comment this article | Views: 85 | Tell a Friend | + Read More... |

Don’t ask me why I am always referring to the Bible. I remember telling you in one of these write ups how, but for the fact that I am the only child of my mother and my sweet looks at pretty girls, perhaps I would have ended up saying mass at the alter and administering sacraments in the Catholic church. It also happened that I was, as Peter Esoka who would prefer to put it, an arts student with a difference. Be the first to comment this article | Views: 49 | Tell a Friend | + Read More... |

Call them what you choose; conmen, faymen, quacks, charlatans, cheats, thieves, wrestlers, pirates, robbers, embezzlers; it all boils down to the same thing; DISHONESTY. Perhaps the world harbours more of them than the honest ones. That is why we are always in troubled waters. On a bright sunny evening in the year 1964s a friend of ours, Paul, visited my wife and I accompanied by two well-dressed young men. They looked smart and elegant with a taste of being well-to-do. Kiss me deadly is the title of a novel I read over fifty years ago. The name of its author and details of the story had long evaporated from this sticky mind of mine. Kiss and deadly are the two words which get coming back to mind even after such a long time. This is because one can hardly watch a love story on TV which does not involve kissing. In those good old days, kissing was considered as bad as having sex in public. I personally think so to this day. Perhaps it is due to the fashion in which we were brought up. In nearly fell into the trap of doing so but when I saw what happened to a colleague of ours, I became ever more determined not to kiss. I have written and talked a lot about HIV.AIDS and the misleading way in which the WHO and health authorities handle it. Many people have asked me to go on radio and television to enlighten the public on my findings and treatment. Unfortunately, traditional healers are not allowed to make further radio announcements on national radio, let alone discuss burning issues like HIV-AIDS. They say, “We too lie”. By the time this article is read and digested, instructions may come from France, Washington or some other peeved Western power to have me eliminated as they have always done. I am not worried or afraid to die for Cameroon, Africa or the rest of the oppressed people Little do many people realise that colonialism is still going on. At first, it was carried out by out-right brutal force. Now, it is by subtle diplomacy, intrigues, complex loans, unbalanced trade deals and brain-washing. This is no matter of crying wolf. We are in the heart of a deep financial crisis. What most people fail to know is that creation or, should I say, any unit, stops functioning perfectly if any part of it is affected adversely. This holds good in every aspect in life. A simple example is the human body. If any part of the body is sick, the whole person is sick. Ask him and he will say “I am sick, I am not well”. Later, he’ll say, “My stomach is paining”. Let it be our stomach or eye or leg; once any part of our body is sick, we are sick; sometimes very sick. Be the first to comment this article | Views: 38 | Tell a Friend | + Read More... |

One can hardly find where to start in talking about MALARIA. It is a killer-disease as old as creation. Day in and out, we hear of meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences held on the fight against malaria, roll back malaria, training trainers, mosquitoes nets, etc, etc. Recently World Leaders and other experts met to discuss malaria. A colossal amount of three billion American dollars was allocated to stamp out the disease by 2015. a very laudable initiative indeed! It sounds like one of those fireside stories which our parents told us during the corn and groundnut season. To us, they were beautiful tales which went no further than listening and laughing or, in some instances, frightened. As long as it did not concern or touch us, they did not really matter. Every day, we read, listen or watch what happens in many countries. We see people die in Iraq, Congo, Ethiopia, Sudan and others. We hear of piracy, of people being tried for genocide. We are told of the thousands of people killed and displaced from their homes because Mugabe must remain in power even when he lost a highly rigged election.
