More than three decades ago, Cameroon’s pioneer Head of State, Ahmadou Ahidjo, during an august public hearing in the present North West Region of Cameroon noted “the culture of a people is their mark of nobility”. Decades later, the Bakossi people of the South West Region of Cameroon not only find in this remark the true meaning of unity, but the essence of collective effort in the search for development . As diverse as the concept of development may appear to be, the Bakossi people, without any fear of contradiction, are resolved to embrace the positive challenges that come with impacting individual lives and communities. The story goes of an old man, who on his death-bed asked his five children to appear before him with a stick each, the size of his thumb. Once before him, he ordered each to break his stick. Everyone one did so with ease. He then obliged them to fetch a stick each again. They complied and handed all the sticks to him. The old man then tightly roped the sticks together and dared anyone break them. In turn, every one tried to no avail. Repeated attempts ended in dismal failure. Elite and friends of Balikumbat village have contributed above FCFA 3 million for the renovation of the Balikumbat Fon’s palace. This amount was realised during the Annual General Assembly meeting of the Balikumbat Development Organization, BADO, last Saturday 29 November 2008 in the BADO multipurpose hall. The General Assembly of the North West Chiefs Union, NOWEFU now has a new President. He is the Fon of Bafmeng, Fon Francis Aneng. Fon Francis Aneng was elected along with other members of the Executive last Saturday 29 November 2008. Other members of the new executive of Nowefu include Fon Akan of Kai as Secretary General and Fon Nfor Ibrahim of Nkambe as Treasurer. Reports however say the elections have been strongly criticized by prominent Fons as having been manipulated by the outgone President, Fon Chaffa XI of Bangolan.
